3rd Annual Thunderbird Open

4 Round Open Swiss Tournament,  Game in 60 minutes
  •  Open Section: Active Duty Air Force members competing for a trip to the Air Force Championship will play each other in rounds 3 and 4.
  •  Scholastic/Non Rated Section: possible if there are enough players who choose not to play in the Open Section (not eligible for Air Force Championship).
  •  Pre-Registration Required No Later Than April 3 for Chess Players requiring access to Elmendorf  Please provide pre-registration information by clicking here!

Civilians must access Elmendorf A.F.B. through the Boniface Parkway Security Gate:

  1. Must be pre-registered and at the Gate between 8:30-9:00 A.M. April 9th to assure Base entry (we will have someone posted at the Visitors Center to make sure there are no access problems).
  2. Must have current: Drivers Licence, Vehicle Registration, Proof of Insurance.

Registration: April 9, 8:30 - 9:15 A.M. Juice, coffee and light snacks will be provided by the Elmendorf Chess Club prior to registration

Entry Fees: Adult - $10, Child - $5 (12 and under)

Game Start Times:
  • Round 1 - 9:30 A.M.
  • Round 2 - 11:30 A.M.
  • Round 3 - 2:30 P.M.
  • Round 4 - 4:30 P.M.

Non-Cash Awards: plaques, medals, or other suitable substitutes

  • Top overall active duty Air Force
  • Medals to Top Juniors

Directions from the Boniface Gate to the Arctic Oasis Community Center:

  1. Enter Boniface Gate and continue straight on Vandenberg Avenue - stay to the left. Vandenberg Avenue makes a sweeping left turn and will become Arctic Warrior Drive.
  2. Make a right turn onto Sijan Avenue after passing the flight line (Sijan Ave. is before Burger King - if you pass Burger King you've gone too far).
  3. Turn left onto 20th Street approximately one block after turning onto Sijan Avenue.
  4. Continue on 20th Street to the Arctic Oasis Community Center (next building on the right hand side after the People Center).
  5. Park in the lot behind the Arctic Oasis Building (Building is clearly marked "Arctic Oasis").
  6. Follow signs at building's rear entrance to the second floor playing site.
